A victory more comfortable than the scoreline suggests, as Yeovil dominated throughout. Potter and Browne played well for Weymouth, denying Yeovil between them on a number of occasions, before Patmore finally got the breakthrough, followed by a Tisdale free-kick. A penalty gave Weymouth their late consolation.
Both teams kept the same starting line-ups from two days ago, and Yeovil went on the attack from the start, the first on-target effort being a long-range shot from Dean Chandler. Ben Smith was on great form, and from deep in the Yeovil half picked out Matt Hayfield who went on a great run only to fire over. Danny Potter, the keeper on loan at Weymouth from Exeter City, made a number of good saves (especially from a long-range Ben Smith shot), and of course the excellent Alex Browne was on-hand to get in some great last ditch tackles as Yeovil pushed on. The closest anyone went to scoring, however, was at the other end: Peter Knox beat David Piper and picked out David Laws, who was in a great position and should have given Pennock no chance. However, his shot was too close to the keeper. Still a good save, but a better shot would have made it 1-0 to the visitors.
The second half was more of the same (except for the bit about Weymouth creating a chance), as the pressure piled on. More saves, more blocks, more good defending from Browne and from Hare until he went off injured.
Finally the breakthrough came when Terry Skiverton's cross was met at the far post by Warren Patmore. He headed down and into the net. Shortly afterwards, it was 2-0, as Paul Tisdale scored direct from a 20-yard free-kick, nice shot.
With a few minutes remaining Weymouth were awarded a penalty, though I couldn't see what the offence was from the far end of the ground. Up stepped David Laws to produce a scoreline which flattered the visitors, Yeovil really could have had a hatful tonight.
Still, it was all entertaining, and produces a tie against fellow Conference side Stevenage in the next round on 15th January.
One piece of bad news to finish off: We understand that some Weymouth fans were attacked at the end of the game by a few Yeovil thugs. We send out our best wishes to any innocent parties hurt, and wish them well.
Sorry no pictures this time, it's too dark at evening games.
