With the wind behind them, Yeovil took the game to Telford, and it was no more than they deserved when they went two-up. It could and should have been more by half-time. But Telford caused problems on the break, and when they had the wind in the second half, and Yeovil relied on no fewer than three goal-line clearances from the superb Kevan Brown to hang on for a win.

In his after-match interview on Radio Bristol, Steve Thompson described the end-to-end wind as 'like having a 12th player', and the advantage showed as Yeovil piled on the early pressure. A combination of the wind and Glen Poole's in-swinging corner, gave Yeovil a number of good early chances. Telford had no notable attempt on goal until the 20th minute, when Tony Penock saved well from the excellent Brian McGorry, But it wasn't long before the ball blew back down the other end, and Yeovil took the lead. Pennock's kick was long, and fooled Albrighton in the Telford defence. He misjudged his jump at the ball, leaving Warren Patmore free with just the keeper to beat, and he finished well (see photo near bottom of page).

Just three minutes later it was 2-0, and Yeovil's domination at this stage was such that the score was fair. Just as it looked like an attack was to come to nothing, Ben Smith whipped in a superb cross to the far post, leaving Patmore to nod in his second. He should have completed his hat-trick when through with a similar chance to his first, and that would surely have sealed the game, but Telford still hit back on the break, Kevan Brown clearing shots off the goal-line twice.

In the second half, the visitors had the advantage, and Brown was to get his hat-trick of goal-line clearances. Telford sub Martin Naylor looked useful playing wide on the right, and he and McGorry carved out a number of chances for the visitors. There was 1/4 of an hour remaining when Telford pulled a goal back, and unsurprisingly it came from Naylor. Yeovil had been on one of a number of breaks which presented second half opportunities to Adrian Foster, but this time he was harshly given offside, and even more harshly booked when a defender squared up to him. From the free-kick Telford got the ball wide left, and the cross was met with a far-post volley from Martyn Naylor, 2-1.

Warren Patmore and Adrian Foster both squandered chances on the break, and even though Yeovil relied heavily on Kev Brown's last ditch clearances, the home side just deserved the win as reward for their early domination. The result marks a whole year without an away Conference win for Telford United!

Meanwhile, Yeovil move up to 3rd in the table, which makes the attendance of 2.174 particularly disappointing, especially on the back of last week's excellent Trophy win over Satanage.

Next up: a Conference visit to Kettering own (29 Jan), and then the FA Trophy trip to Bedford Town (5 Feb).

Above: Warren Patmore slots in his first goal.

Above: And a few minutes later he follows the ball into the net as he heads in Ben Smith's cross for his, and Yeovil's, second.

Above: Warren has a good chance for his hat-trick in a move similar to the one that produced the first goal, but this time the 'keeper got down to make the save.
