Both teams came out with something to play for, Yeovil trying to maintain their 100% home record and stay top of the league, and Sutton attempting to win their first away game of the season. Appalling conditions and some comical refereeing made for an un-entertaining and at times, frustrating game.
Sutton looked to take control of the game from the start, with Mark Watson breaking through in the 3rd minute only to be denied but yet another fine save from Tony Pennock, but within minutes, a Warren Patmore flick-on saw Steve Stott shoot narrowly wide.
Yeovil were again unlucky in the 32nd minute, when Adie Foster drove the ball across the Sutton goal to find an unmarked Patmore on the far post, but this time he was denied by the upright.
The teams looked to be going in 0-0 at half time, but in injury time a Stott shot was blocked by the Sutton keeper, and Matt Hayfield was there to nod in the rebound. 1-0 to Yeovil at half time.
Yeovil started the second half the brighter of the two teams, but failed to make any real chances, and it was Sutton who eventually pulled one back, Mark Watson finally sticking the ball in the back of the net after an untidy goal mouth scramble.
This seemed to rock the Yeovil side, who immediately lapsed into a totally unimpressive style of play, and not surprisingly they conceded yet another goal from a set piece, when Bary Laker tapped in from a corner with a quarter of an hour remaining.
Despite going behind for the first time in the League this season, Yeovil remained unimpressive, with several of the players appearing to be struggling with their fitness. After what seemed an eternity, Colin Lippiatt finally made some changes, bringing Archer and Eaton on in the 81st minute. The two subs should have pulled the game level minutes later, when Eaton broke through the Sutton defence, but their keeper Gareth Howells performed brilliantly, denying both Eaton and the following Archer from equalising.
Patmore appeared to save the day with minutes left to play, by finding the back of the net with a superb diving header, the Sutton players' heads dropped, home crowd went wild, then the referee spotted the linesman's flag, and disallowed the goal for offside.
The game drew to a close, with Yeovil loosing for the first time at home this season, and a well deserved win for the travelling Sutton.
