A game of two halves (if I can be excused the old cliché), the first of which saw Yeovil deservedly take the lead, and the second of which saw Southport get a justified equaliser. Yeovil nearly snatched the points at the end, but Patmore's goal was disallowed for offside. This left the result a fair draw.
The first threat came from Southport, when Arnold's cross just evaded Lee Ellison on the edge of the Yeovil six-yard box. Two minutes later, the home side had their first meaningful attempt; Tony Pounder's cross to the far post was met by the inrushing David Piper, only to see Grayston knock the ball away for a corner.
Charlie Griffin was getting in some good work oustide the area. The loan-striker, who mightn't have started had Warren Patmore (along with Ben Smith and Terry Skiverton) not arrived late for the match, got in a good shot on the turn, but it wasn't going to trouble the accomplished Steve Dickinson in the Southport goal.
Yeovil were by now well on top, and playing some neat football. They took a deserved lead after about half-an-hour. Dickinson was unlucky; first he made a great save from Steve Stott, who had latched onto the ball in the area after a Charlie Griffin shot hit a defender. And within seconds he made another great block to put Foster's header onto the post. This time, however, Fozzie was able to knock in the rebound.
Dickinson again did well to save at the feet of Foster, while Southport were threatening little at the other end. Mark Stuart should have done better when he had time and space around the Yeovil 'D', but hooked his shot well wide.
The second half was a different story. Southport started to play the better football, and Yeovil seemed to get frustrated.

Foster celebrates the opening goal

By the 54th minute, the visitors were well on top, and half-time sub Lee Elam levelled the scores. Tony Pounder failed to collect a clearance wide on the left, and Elam latched onto the loose ball, chipping Tony Pennock superbly from outside the penalty area.
Good chances were spurned by Arnold and Ellison, though Griffin should also have scored. Matt Stowell was up for a Jamie Pitman corner, putting a header onto the bar. Griffin got to the rebound first, but put his header wide. He was immediately replaced by Warren Patmore. |
Yeovil weren't to create another opening until near the end of the game. With a minute left a difficult chance fail to Adrian Foster, but he couldn't get a firm header onto a ball that Patmore had knocked back across goal.
Normal time was up when Neil Woods might have grabbed the points for Southport, but he put his far post header over. And in injury time, Ardrian Foster was put away down the right; his perfect cross was headed home by Patmore. But the assistant referee had flagged for offside as soon as Foster had the ball, so the goal was not to stand. We were in-line in the main stand, and unfortunately it looked like the right decision to us.
Next up is the FA Cup 1st Round tie at Reading.
