match report

For the most part this was an exciting match, a certainly a tense one for Yeovil fans as the club held on to a 1-0 lead from the 26th minute onwards, and went extremely close to conceding an own-goal equaliser right at the end.

Hereford got going more quickly than Yeovil at the start of each half, and despite losing defender Ian Wright injured after just five minutes, the visitors had the upper hand early on. There was a scare when a Tony Pennock clearance hit Robin Elmes and rebounded goalwards, but Rob Cousins was on-hand to clear up. Aside from this moment, Tony Pennock was in superb form, again saving some of his best for the game against his old club. He was awarded the sponsors' MOTM prize.

The breakthrough came when Hereford had been on top, but marked the start of a great improvement in Yeovil's play. A cross from the left was flapped at by Mark Jones (brother of Paul, Southampton and Wales), and the ball fell to David Piper 15 yards out. Initially he appeared to have taken too long to shoot, but then he fired in a ball that nearly took off the head of James Wall as it streaked into the net.

18-y-o Craig Hanson in particular looked sharp for the visitors in the first half, frequently causing trouble when running at the Yeovil defence. For the home side, Ben Smith repeated some of the quality he showed at Welling on Saturday. However, both players faded after the break, and the first 15 minutes or so of the second half were pretty dull and uneventful.

As Hereford pushed on for an equaliser, Yeovil broke free a few times, and when Sturgess pulled down Jason Eaton when he was through, he must have thought he was heading for dismissal, but a yellow card was the decision.

The game was tense as Yeovil continued to hold on to the slender lead. They went close to increasing it when a Warren Patmore header brought a superb save from Mark Jones, while at the other end Tony Pennock continued to look unbeatable.

The final minute saw great drama, as a Hereford free-kick was met by Warren Patmore, whose header went on to hit Terry Skiverton, and pass only just wide of his own goal with Tony Pennock finally beaten.

The win lifts Yeovil to 2nd in the Conference table, and the next match is against 5th-placed Morecambe, at Huish Park on Saturday.
