Although not nearly as exciting as last week's encounter against Rushden, the points are just as valuable! Ben Smith's goal was enough to give Yeovil all three, as the side headed for a just-about-deserved away win.
With Matt Stowell's loan period at Yeovil ended, Paul Steele came up from the reserves to take his place in the centre of defence, and had a good game. Not that either defence was greatly tested early on, except when Sutton contrived to create a Yeovil chance courtesy of a poor back-pass, but Hayfield knocked it straight at the keeper.
Ben Smith was the most creative of Yeovil's players, and his 35th minute volley went just over, though the deadlock would surely have been broken if he'd picked out the unmarked Matt Hayfield at the far post. But Smith did get what turned out to be the winner five minutes later; a through ball sent Warren Patmore down the channel, whose square ball was met by Hayfield. As his shot was blocked by keeper then defender, Smith finally bundled it into the net.
The second half saw a little more pressure from the home side, though they never really looked that threatening apart from a few corners which Yeovil didn't deal with as well as they might. And when the ball was cleared, the midfield was on occasions allowing it straight back to Sutton, who were then on the attack again.
Yeovil did break away a few times, Matt Hayfield hit the bar, Warren Patmore had a shot almost fumbled into the net by Gareth Howells, and Rob Cousins had a 25-yard volley well-saved by the keeper.
So, no more goals, and not the most exciting of games. But a solid performance in general, and an important three points away from home.
Elsewhere today, Kingstonian lost and Nuneaton drew, so some ground was gained. Dover continue their excellent run of form. See the results and updated tables, and for more detail, see the conference guide which also includes form tables and other junk.
