Jamie Pitman, and David Piper.

Returning to the more familiar 3-5-2 formation seemed to pay off, but there was more to it than that; the team battled harder than they had done for some time, and this, combined with a superb performance from Tony Pennock, gave Yeovil a good win at high-flyers Kingstonian.

There were a number of notable performances today; Pitman was outstanding again, Stott fought hard for everything in the midfield, but Tony Pennock was a real star. Most of the first-half action saw the Ks attacking, but without too much penetration. Kadi (that's his name on the teamsheet, but I'm sure he was announced as Julia Carling) should have hit the target early on when in front of goal just 12 yards out, but fired well over.

At the other end, Steve Farrelly in the Ks goal wasn't greatly troubled, though it looked for a moment that he might be caught out by a deflected free-kick; he had time to recover and make the save as the shot wasn't struck well.

Matt Stowell was playing as the left player in the central three of the defence, and looked solid. He was called on to make a sharp clearance in the 14th minute when a quick ball across the face of the Yeovil goal looked like creating a good chance for Kingstonian. The home side's infamous midfielder Gary Pratterson was his usual self; escaping without a caution when he retaliated after a challenge from Steve Stott. He was booked later for a foul; one can only assume that the referee forgot the 'no cautions for Pratterson' rule that operates in the Conference.

The closest anyone went to scoring in the first half was when the ball was lost by Yeovil in midfield, Marshall raced onto it to find Tony Pennock making a block with his feet, for the ball to fall to the excellent Mustafa, who should have done better than to hit the bar.

My notes for the second half, apart from the goal, consist mainly of comments about Tony Pennock making important saves. As Kingstonian piled on the pressure, he was called on a number of times including a stunning block from Marshall. But after Yeovil took the lead, the home side suddenly looked less composed; the passed the ball around less, and hoofed it more, and this didn't suit them at all. Yeovil's best spell came late on, though perhaps they didn't go too close to extending the lead.

Pennock was beaten once, but the Ks goal was disallowed for offside. The only goal came from Charlie Griffin. A deep cross was headed goalwards by Chris Sparks, and Griffin beat the keeper to the ball to nod it just inside the post. We thought Yeovil could have been awarded a penalty when Adrian Foster was bundled over by three Ks players, but as one of them was Pratterson, of course it doesn't count.

Injury time brought not only another great save from Pennock, this time from Marshall, but also a missed sitter from Kingstonian's Geoff Pitcher; he put his far-post free header wide when he looked certain to grab a late equaliser.

So, not only a good result, but a good performance. More battle was shown from the Yeovil side than from the last several games put together. The return to a more familiar formation must have helped; Colin Lippiatt had said that we don't have the right players for a 4-4-2, and perhaps the previous few games proved him right.
