survey 3 (may/june 1998)

by Martin Baker:

These are the results of the third survey. Note that with several answers I've given a percentage mark - this is a "degree of confidence" mark - i.e. an answer of "definitely yes" is a stronger degree of confidence than "probably yes". I've therefore weighted your marks accordingly. Some questions have been re-numbered for this web presentation.

Context: This survey was conducted immediately after the end of the 1997/98 season, and at the time we were expecting the summer appointment of a full manager or director of football.

1. Degree of Confidence in Colin Lippiatt   89%

2. Degree of Confidence in board's decision to remove Roberts 90%
Comment: The 90% figure is quite astonishing given the uproar on the list at the time of the decision, and is another statement of how well Lippiatt has done to convince the many doubters.

3. The board should do the following this summer with the current managerial level vacancy (here we show % of votes cast for each option):
(a) No new appointment is necessary 47%
(b) Appoint a full time manager 22%
(c) Appoint a part time director of football 12%
(d) Appoint a full time director of football 6%
(e) Appoint a part time manager 3%
(f) Don't know / no opinion 9%
Comment: With the top score, many people indicated that they would want the extra money gained by not filling the appointment to be used as part of CL's players budget.

4. Assuming the board did go ahead and appoint someone (although this looks increasingly unlikely) this is the degree of confidence you would have in each person listed
(a) Geoff Chapple
Kingstonian and ex-Woking
74%
(b) Steve Cotterill
Cheltenham
67%
(c) Brian McDermott
Slough & ex-Yeovil
65%
(d) Tony Pounder
reserve team manager and player
55%
(e) Colin Addison
Merthyr Tydfil & ex-Hereford
48%
(f) Steve White
Cardiff City player & ex-Swindon
44%
(g) Norman Hayward (as DoF)
current YTFC director
35%
(h) Tony Ricketts
no current position, ex-Bath & Yeovil
9%
Comment: This implies that only three out of the eight people mentioned would go down really well as an appointment. And I guess we shouldn't be too surprised as to where Tony Ricketts ended up.

5. In terms of new players you wanted Colin Lippiatt to buy
(a) Left Back 25%
(b) Tall Central Defender 18%
(c) Playmaker Striker 18%
(d) Central Midfielder 11%
(e) Ball playing central defender 9%
(f) Right Back 7%
(g) Goalkeeper 5%
(h) Poacher Striker 4%
(i) Left Winger 2%
(j) Right Winger 1%
Roughly speaking, the results suggest that people feel our most vulnerable position was that vacated by Lee Archer (note that the survey was conducted mostly before his departure), followed by the need for cover for Al-James Hannigan and Warren Patmore.

6. Finally, your degree of confidence in where Yeovil will finish in the league 1998/99
(a) Champions 24%
(b) Top Three 52%
(c) Top Five 79%
(d) Top Half 99%
(e) Bottom Half 9%
(f) Relegated 2%
Coment: These figures are a 'degree of confidence', so this doesn't suggest that 2% of people think we are going to get relegated, just that for a couple of people, they thought that there was some possibility.

For the large majority, anything in the lower half of the table was a distinct impossibility. By the looks of it, it appears that people would be confident about looking for a 4th/5th/6th position with just a 50:50 chance that we might be up in the top three with the big boys.
