end-of-season review 2000/1 - september 2000

A most dramatic month, culminating in manger David Webb's resignation to join Southend.

The team goes top of the league for the first time this season on 9th September, and finshes the month in second, two points behind Rushden.

Adrian Foster moves on at the start of the month, joining Forest Green Rovers, who also have ex-Yeovil players Rob Cousins, Dean Birkby, and David Norton.

As in August, the team is playing well, and lose just once. And again, as per August, the one defeat is heavy - this time at Boston United.

A 100% home record is maintained, helping make up ground on leaders Rushden & Diamonds, as Yeovil move past Telford United and Leigh RMI in the table.

nuneaton borough 0, yeovil town 2

A comfortable, but not always spectacular, performance at Nuneaton, and it's another three point haul for Yeovil. Barrington Belgrave continues to trouble opposition defences, and was pulled down in the area for a penalty, dispatched by Darren Way.

Warren Patmore gets the second - and it's his first goal of the season, as he neatly rounds the keeper after latching on to a poor defensive pass.

With the small squad, the team are still naming just four subs!

Some great football, and a lot of pressure is applied to Woking - but it's not until late in the game that Paul Steele gets the winner, volleying home from inside the area.

The attendance is a disappointing 2,462 - with the team playing good football, and winning, there really ought to be more punters coming through the gates.

yeovil town 2, chester city 1

The gate creeps towards 3000, as the best side yet to visit Huish Park go desperately close to ending the 100% home record. Warren Patmore and Nick Crittenden put the Glovers two up, and there were just two minutes left when Chester pulled one back, with a James Bent own-goal. They pushed hard for an equaliser - Tony Pennock made a superb stop at the feet of a striker who fell onto the keeper. As the goal laid wide open, the first shot hit the bar, the rebound from that hit another striker, and then bounced up onto the bar again, before being scrambled away!

The win takes Yeovil top of the league for the first time this season, as Rushden draw.

boston united 4, yeovil town 1

A tough one for Yeovil fans to get to - it's one hell of a trek for a midweek game, and comes right in the middle of the petrol crisis! Yeovil took the lead through Warren Patmore, but Boston equalised just before the break with a penalty by Paul Wilson (no, not our Paul Wilson!). A hotly disputed second penalty allowed Wilson to put Boston ahead, and two late goals saw Yeovil fail to regain the league's top spot - lost the night before when Rushden & Diamonds, and Hereford United, both won, leaving the Glovers in third.

stevenage borough 0, yeovil town 0

The Glovers move back up to second with this result. It's a decent performance in general - better finishing would be produced a comfortable win (as would a less able opposition goalkeeper!).

yeovil town 2, doncaster rovers 0

It's back to Huish Park, so it's another win as the excellent home record continues. Doncaster aren't a patch on the side that we'll play later in the season. Not only are there injuries, but a few players are sent home for disciplinary reasons. Belgrave is again key to the attack, though the first goal comes from a Rovers player - Neil Campbell flicking a Ben Smith corner past his own keeper. The second is a Darren Way penalty.

This game saw the settled line-up change slightly for the first time in a while, as Andy Lindegaard comes in for James Bent.

hayes 2, yeovil town 3

There's something about Yeovil/Hayes games - there have been a number of thrillers over the years, and this is another one. Both teams push forward and look sharp up front, and this is a hugely entertaining game.

Barrington Belgrave puts the Glovers up front before Rocky Baptiste equalises. Then Warren Patmore puts Yeovil in front again, only for Dave Stevens to make it level again just before half-time. Only one goal is scored in the 2nd half, the winner going to Patmore, but there's still plenty of drama.

yeovil town 3, morecambe 2

Morecambe looked like a good side this afternoon, and Yeovil are perhaps a little lucky to extend the 100% home record. But all this is overshadowed by the post-match Press Conference. David Webb, the manager who has transformed the side, resigns to join league club Southend, where he's served before and has strong emotional ties.

Yeovil's performance is less impressive this afternoon - with Warren Patmore winning so much in the air, it seemed just too tempting to lob the ball up to him all the time. There's still some tweaking going on for the wide-right position - it's Bradley Peters getting the nod today.

Still the attendances are disappointing, only just breaking 2500 for this one. Nick Crittenden puts the Glovers ahead, but Stewart Drummond and Phil Eastwood put Morecambe ahead before the break.

Two goals in two minutes get the points for Yeovil - Darren Way then Warren Patmore finding the net. But the club is looking for a new manager yet again.
