end-of-season review 2000/1 - october 2000

So, the third month of the season starts with no official manager. Steve Thompson is running the side again, as he did before David Webb arrived.

Thompson takes the team to the top spot. When new boss Colin Addison arrives, he keeps them there for four months. The margin at the top is just one point at the end of the month - but leaders Yeovil also have a game in hand over 2nd-placed Rushden.

The performances of Yeovil and Rushden & Diamonds suggests that the game at Nene Park in November could be crucial, so the match is made all-ticket. There is disappointment as Rushden give Yeovil insufficient allocation to meet the demand.

The FA Cup campaign gets underway, though a replay is required after Horsham get a draw at Huish Park.

The month ends with another PR gaffe for the club, as it descends into its familar civil war mode - legal action is threatened against the Independent Supporters Association for using the club badge.

Yeovil stuff a team for the first time this season, and the 4-0 result against Dover not only maintains the 100% home record, it sends the manager-less Glovers back to the top of the table, as rivals Rushden lose at Leigh RMI.

Going four up early in the second half enabled Yeovil to ease up in this game. Ben Smith opened the scoring, and he's playing some of his best football since his early days at the club.

Warren Patmore's first goal of two had an odd look about it - he appeared to mis-time going up for a header, and ended up readjusting in the air to volley it home.

Darren Way's impressive 30-yard free-kick made it three, before Warren got his second to complete the rout, finishing off a move from Nick Crittenden.

There is usually a good game when Yeovil visit Edgar Street - and this was no exception. The point keeps the Glovers top.

Matt Gardiner headed the Bulls ahead in the 2nd minute, putting away a corner taken by the impressive Michael McIndoe, who will join the Glovers later in the season. But the lead lasted just two more minutes as Wazza lobbed in from 22 yards.

Barrington Belgrave put Yeovil in front (see picture), but a tense game ended all-square when Gavin Williams equalised for Hereford. It was all-square on the red card count too, both Williams and Yeovil's Terry Skiverton being shown red for earning their second cautions.

Colin Addison is in the crowd to watch the game, but does not officially take charge of the team yet.

The Nationwide Variety Club Trophy: A complete waste of time. But Yeovil have a new manager who needs to take a look at the full first team, so a strong side is fielded that fails to lose. Yeovil go on to the next round thanks to the only goal of the game, from Warren Patmore.

After a poor start, Yeovil recover and come from behind to record a valuable away win. Northwich go into the game bottom of the league, yet put up a decent performance - their half-time lead is thoroughly deserved.

New manager Colin Addison earns his corn in the second half, making a formation change that alters the game for the better. Ben Smith volleys home after being set up by a Warren Patmore header to level the scores, and a foul on Darren Way produces a penalty from which the midfielder bags the winner.

Kingstonian have long been a thorn in the side for Yeovil, and they don't look like a side heading for relegation in the first period. They take a half-time lead, Derek Allen capitalising on a defensive error.

But Yeovil are again better in the second half, and soon get level through Warren Patmore. The win is earned by two goals from Barrington Belgrave, the second of which earns my vote for goal of the season, as he jinks around several defenders before firing into the roof of the net as the keeper comes out to challenge. Top talent.

The attendance finally edges nearer to the 3000 mark.

The final game of the season sees the FA Cup campaign get underway. It didn't start well, as Horsham get a draw at Huish Park. Yeovil fail to find the net themselves, Charman's goal is equalised by an o.g. by Kirby.

Yeovil had plenty of the play, but time after time put shots too close to the Horsham keeper.

By the time the game is played (it's delayed due to the weather), it's known that the winners will be at home to Colchester United in the 1st round proper.

internet player of the month

Darren Way is your choice of Player of the Month for October, following up his similar win in September. There were several five different MOTM choices in six games, but Darren's high consistency got him the nod ahead of Ben Smith, who is playing his best football since his early days at Yeovil.
