end-of-season review 2000/1 - november 2000

What a fantastic month - a 2-2 draw at Scarborough is a decent enough result, yet it's still the lowlight!

Firstly, there's the top of the table clash - 1st place Yeovil at 2nd place Rushden, and the Glovers win 2-1 to open a gap at the top of the table.

Then Horsham are beaten in the FA Cup replay to get into the competition proper, where there's a 5-1 demolition of 2nd division league club Colchester United.

And, this web site breaks the news that the roof development of the home end is to start in the new year.

Fantastic.

Oh, there was an exit from the Somerset Premier Cup, but who cares?!

One negative point from the month was Warren Patmore's testimonial. The attendance is small, leading to some criticism of the fans from the player, which he later withdraws.

Too early in the season to be a decider of course, but this result really puts Yeovil in a strong position. Colin Addison has really just carried on what David Webb started - no significant changes, and the small squad size doesn't matter yet as everyone is fit.

After this win, Yeovil are four points clear at the top with a game in hand. Warren Patmore opens the scoring with a neat lob over the keeper just before half-time. After the break, some Rusden pressure pays off, and Justin Jackson equalises, following up the rebound after Tony Pennock saved a shot from Jen-Michel Sigere.

Late in the game, Jon Brady handles on the line as Yeovil push for a winner - Brady gets the red card, and Darren Way scores the winner for the Glovers.

The attendance of 5283 will remain the best of the season until the reverse fixture at Huish Park in April.

On paper, an unexciting tie compared to the Rushden game of a few days ago, but a brief look at Yeovil's history tells you how important the FA Cup can be.

It's hard work breaking down Horsham, but finally the deadlock is broken with a rare goal from David Piper, and a fine strike it is too, turning two defenders before slotting home.

When Yeovil get a late penalty, usual taker Darren Way has already been substituted, so Piper gets the nod and scores his second goal of the evening to win Yeovil a home tie against Colchester United in the 1st round of the FA Cup.

The second-half of this game is not only one of the highlights of the season, it's one of the highlights of the 30 years I've been watching Yeovil Town.

Colchester are two divisions above Yeovil, and look decent enough in the first half, although neither team could break the deadlock.

The Glovers' performance after the break was out of the top drawer. Two scrappy goals set it off, Warren Patmore knocking in a rebound off the keeper for the first, then Barrington Belgrave does the same for the second. Terry Skiverton heads home a Ben Smith free-kick before Colchester pull one back.

The game is sealed with a Darren Way penalty after Roy O'Brien is fouled in the area, and Warren Patmore's header completes the rout. Five goals against a team two divisions higher? Can't be bad!

A late penalty by Simon Betts, later to sign for Yeovil, denies the Glovers two points at the Stadium of Chips - still, it's better than the 5-0 drubbing we got last season!

The conditions are as bad as last year. Even if the result isn't so bad, Yeovil might have lost had Tony Pennock not played so well - and his Boro counterpart so badly. Priestley flapped at a Ben Smith free-kick to allow the Glovers to go ahead, and after Boro had equalised, he dropped the ball at the feet of Darren Way to allow the midfielder to put Yeovil ahead for a 2nd time.

The late penalty that gave the home side their (admittedly deserved) draw was a bit dubious, but Simon Betts gave Tony Pennock little chance from the spot, and the match, only the second league game of the month, ends in a draw.

Still, a cracking month thanks to the games against Rushden and Scarborough.
