end-of-season review 2000/1 - february 2001
February starts and ends with the FA Trophy, but most importantly it ends with Yeovil off of the top spot for the first time in over four months, dropping to second, where they will stay for the rest of the season.
In the Trophy, there are two away ties, and both to leaders of 'feeder' leagues. A lucky start helps Yeovil on the way to a win at Emley, but a poor performance brings defeat at Burton Albion.
The home terrace also closes. It had been intended to keep it open during much of the rebuilding work, but safety officer decided to get uppity about the yellow lines for the first time in years (fire risk my arse!), and the result is that the home fans move to the away end (where no attention is paid to the lines again). Away fans have to use the Bartlett Stand.
There are a few player movements - Paul Steele goes to Woking on loan, while Michael McIndoe is a club record signing from Hereford United. Marcus Jones comes in from Cheltenham Town, while Martin Gritton joins on loan from Plymouth Argyle.
emley 2, yeovil town 4 (fa trophy 4th round)
This is an odd game - Yeovil are 3-1 up early on without having played well. The goals came from an o.g. and two excellent long range shots, from Simon Betts and Glenn Poole. But after Tony Pennock is sent off, and Emley scored the resulting penalty, it's rather tense until Ben Smith seals it late on.
chester city 2, yeovil town 1
A poor performance, and Yeovil are torn apart by Chester's Jimmy Haarhoff. The home side were two ahead by half-time, and although James Bent pulled one back late on, but the Glovers still went home empty-handed.
Still, rivals Rushden dropped points at Forest Green, and Yeovil remain three points ahead, with two games in hand.
yeovil town 2, boston united 1
Michael McIndoe wins your vote as MOTM on his début. This was an easier win than the scoreline suggests. Boston's goal is late consolation after McIndoe and Betts (from a penalty) put Yeovil two up.
Chris Weale makes his conference début in goal, as Tony Pennock is suspended following his dismissal at Emley.
yeovil town 1, dagenham and redbridge 3
Dagenham are in the early stages of a impressive run of nine straight wins when they come to Huish Park, on their way towards an excellent 3rd-place finish.
They're comfortably the better team on the day, as Yeovil fail to match their early season form. The state of the pitch isn't helping, it's pretty poor for much of the winter.
Darren Way puts Yeovil ahead early on, but it's downhill from there as Dagenham take the points.
Yeovil are off the the top of the table too, on goal difference from Rushden and Diamonds, who have played two more games.
burton albion 2, yeovil town 1
The team isn't at its best, and this is a poor showing at Burton. One can't really complain about the result. A quickly taken free-kick catches everyone out, and Tony Pennock pulls down the breaking striker to give away a penalty, and Burton go ahead. And excellent goal doubles the lead, and although Andy Lindegaard gets one back, Yeovil are out of the trophy.
