end-of-season review 2000/1 - august 2000

The summer upheaval is behind us, and it's time for action. Kettering Town are the visitors on the first day, and the Yeovil line-up is one that is to change little for the early part of the season. Darren Way, signed only a day or so before the season started, is on the bench, and Roy O'Brien starts, in midfield. But Roy lunges into a bad tackle in the first half on his début, and is rewarded with a straight red card. This was to give Darren Way his chance for the second game, which he took with style.

The formation was 4-4-2, as evidently preferred by David Webb (and managers of most successful teams the world over!). Barrington Belgrave and Warren Patmore do the honours up front. The oddity is in the wingers - left-footed James Bent plays on the right, while right-footed Nick Crittenden plays on the left. The small size of the 1st team squad is illustrated by there only being four subs named.

Kettering are beaten quite easily, James Bent scoring in the 1st half, and Barrington Belgrave in the 2nd. Belgrave won our poll for the Man of the Match. One slight worry was the loss of Terry Skiverton to injury, which forced Warren Patmore into the defence as cover. The small squad means that injuries and suspensions could cost dear.

So, an easy 2-0 win. Were Yeovil better than many predicted, or were Kettering just a poor side? Hindsight will tell us that both are true!

woking 2, yeovil town 3

The first away trip, and it's a visit to Kingfield to face Woking, managed by former Yeovil boss Colin Lippiatt - and their starting XI featured three Yeovil players from last season in Kevan Brown, Jamie Pitman and Matt Hayfield.

Woking take an early two-goal lead, and the home fans delight in what looked like it might be a comfortable victory for the part-time club against newly-full-time Yeovil. A couple of defensive lapses, and an "up for it" Woking are away.

Barrington Belgrave, on the way to another MOTM performance, pulls one back before half-time. His early season pace is to cause turmoil in defences up and down the country. Yeovil take control of the game, but there's some luck in the equaliser - Anthony Tonkin's weak shot towards the near post is fumbled by keeper Ormerod, and goes in. Arguably, an own-goal. The points are sealed by a cracking volley from Ben Smith at the edge of the area, and the result is a deserved win after that shaky start.

After the match, Jamie Pitman is presented the "Internet Player of the Year" trophy for 1999/2000 by the previous year's winner, Warren Patmore.

This was something of a drubbing in the end. The fight and promise of the first two games get lost somewhere on the journey up North, as Yeovil are comprehensively beaten in all departments. Southport have the upper hand for much of the game, but don't score until after the break. Quite comfortably they rattle in another two, as (apart from the first few minutes at Woking) serious questions are asked of this young side for the first time.

Tony Pennock wins MOTM in a game that we lose heavily - says it all!

yeovil town 4, hednesford town 2

The second home match gets the side back to winning ways, and again Barrington Belgrave is key. He wraps up player of the month with his third MOTM win in four games.

This will be known as The Trevor Kettle Match. The ref that is to become a standing joke around the conference before quietly disappearing (phew) has more impact than anyone else.

More importantly, Yeovil are playing attractive, pacy, exciting football, and win more comfortably than the 4-2 scoreline suggests. Nick Crittenden starts things off, with James Bent and Paul Steele putting the Glovers three up. Mr Kettle tries to even things up, with a most suspect penalty decision, but Neil Davis' spot-kick is saved by Tony Pennock. They do pull one back immediately before the break, though Barrington Belgrave restores the three-goal margin.

Another penalty decision from Kettle, and again Pennock saves from Davis, but this time the striker puts in the rebound, to get a flattering consolation for the Pitmen.

Hednesford are another poor looking side, but you can only beat the teams you're up against! Soon the three teams Yeovil have beaten will all be struggling near the bottom, though Woking will recover later in the season.

internet player of the month

Barrington Belgrave is your choice of Player of the Month. The results for August include the game at Nuneaton, even though it was in September, to provide sufficient games to eliminate the statistical oddities that hit the same poll last season!
