an interview with head coach colin lippiatt

July 1999: Colin takes a quick break from the preparation for the new season to answer a few questions for the independent yeovil town web site.

Many thanks to Colin, and also to Robert Lippiatt for relaying the questions and transcribing the answers.

Are we entering the 1999/2000 with a stronger team than we entered 1998/99? ie do the new signings more than outweigh the loss of the likes of Al-James Hannigan and owen pickard?

Yes I believe they do but obviously only time will tell.

The transfer-listed players that haven't yet found new clubs, eg ben smith: can we expect to see them featuring at all, in the pre-season games, and even in the Conference?

Most definately, any player still at Yeovil has a chance to get into the team, and I will be using all of them during the friendly games.

Some of the reserves only broke through into the first team last season when the title had become pretty unlikely. Do you expect this to change this season, perhaps given the promising performances of Paul Steele and Anthony Tonkin?

If a player is good enough for the first team then yes he will stand a chance, like last year I will watch the reserves as much as I can otherwise I will rely on reports given to me.

I believe the first team squad this year is stronger so it would be true to say that if the players perform well then it's obviously going to be more difficult for the reserve team players to get in.

Would another long cup run have a significant impact on the chances of winning the Conference?

Although the cup run does bring with it certain financial benefits it is true to say that it can prove to be a destraction to the league program.

We all enjoy a good cup run and I would love nothing more(apart from winning the league) than to get Yeovil Town FC to Wembley this season, but at the end of the day the League Title has got to be the aim.

It's also important to remember that a cup run can leave you with a backlog of fixtures which is exactly what we encountered last Season.
