an interview with ex-yeovil star john mcginlay
Many thanks to Ben Hartshorn for contributing his exclusive questionnaire-style interview. It was originally made for the 4th edition of the YTFC fanzine She Fell Over, but that issue never appeared.
Ben says:
He filled it out 1994/5, or about then. There was a gap of about eight months between sending it to him and it coming back, so I just hope it wasn't his team mates or somebody in the pub getting him into trouble. I'd say it is a footballer's handwriting, though!
Who did you share a hotel room with on those lonely Friday nights in Boston?
In all my time at Yeovil Town. the only times we stayed away were the end-of-season trips, and my room-mate was Gerry Pearson when Brian Hall took us to Spain.
Which Conference club are you pleased that you don't have to visit now you're in the Big Time?
I wouldn't say I was in the Big Time, but I don't miss Bath City; their supporter (sic) hated me. I've been back at Twerton a few times with my various clubs v. Bristol Rovers but I hate the place as much as they hate me!
If you were going to be carried home on a Saturday night, where did you prefer to be found? And what other YTFC players would get the job of phoning a cab?
I got carried home a few times, and usually it was myself and Gerry Pearson out on the town. It was hard to get a good team spirit going as most of the lads lived away form Yeovil, but myself and Gerry had some great times. We really enjoyed ourselves.
Can you name three other teams that play in Green & White?
Glasgow Celtic, Hibs and Buckie Thistle.
They say it's "grim up North". What's the weather like in Bolton?
Grim is about right, it rains all the time but the people in Bolton make up for it, they have really made myself and my family welcome.
If we had a whip-round, what would it take to get you back to Huish?
One case of Tenents Lager! Seriously, football is a funny game, and you don't really know what's around the corner. But if everything went OK, I think I would like to come back to Yeovil Town one day. I went to watch Yeovil against Macclesfield recently, and the supporters gave me a great reception and I really appreciate that.
