the italian clubs and leagues
The top two divisions of the Italian League (Serie A and B) were professional, and national. Below that, Serie C and D were regional semi-pro competitions (though a few clubs, including Bari, were full-time)
Serie C provided six clubs for the Anglo-Italian Tournament, Bari, Lecco, Cremonese, Turris, Teramo, and Parma.
The sixty clubs at that level were formed into three divisions of twenty, representing the northern regions, the centre, and the south of the country respectively. Average gate for 1975/76 was 3,239, though there was a wide variance, with Bari pulling 22,000 for a league game shortly before their visit to England.
Unlike in the English game at that time, there was direct promotion/relegation between the pro and semi-pro levels of the game, ie betweem Serie B and Serie C.
Serie D was also generally semi-pro, featuring 162 teams in nine regional divisions. Average gate for 1975/76 was 1180.
The current (1999) structure is quite different.
