Chelmsford City were a club perhaps more ambitious than their league record warranted, though they did win the Southern League Championship in 1971/72. They had a stadium with a (then) capacity of 20,000, and had plans for major development of the facilities.
They also had a few notable players at this time. Between the sticks was Nigel Spink, who later won a European Cup medal with Nottingham Forest. And up front was a man who, at his best, was one of England's all time greats: Jimmy Greaves. He saw out the latter days of his career at Chelmsford, though his performances at this time were hampered by what he later admitted to be a serious alcohol addiction. His career took in Chelsea, Milan, Spurs, and West Ham, scoring 357 league goals. And of course England, bagging an impressive 44 for the national team.
Squad: Bobby Kellard (player/manager), Foggo, Penn, Little, Lamb, Spink, Horner, Walker, Burney, Tomkins, Coker, Martin, Rowell and Greaves.
