The leading contenders in the ICIS league come head to head in a game that could decide the eventual champions. |
Conflicting reports had been going around all day that the attendance was going to be anywhere between 4000 - 6000 which everyone thought would make the game go with a bit of atmosphere for once.
After getting to the game early and standing behind the goal in the Yeovil terrace it was clear to see that more people than the stadium could hold were coming. This is strange really because it was not a cup game and it was hardly the title decider with at least 10 games to go. Still it was not long before the lads started singing and with the players coming onto the pitch to raptuous applause we all knew we were in for something special.
The game starts and Yeovil are on top as Engwell runs down the wing shoots and even before the ball hits the back of the net we all go wild. The crowd start to sing Cheer up Georgie Borg oh what can it mean? and before we could finish singing we'd scored another! Again we go mental this time with a little bit more wildness.
The feeling of elation fills the ground but unfortunately Enfield start to play as if they should be challenging for the championship. It doesn't take long for them to score through a player called Moran who was their best player by a long way after a goal mouth scramble. If only we could have held out untill half time we would have won the game easily but due to a hotly disputed penalty (it was outside the area) Moran was able to send Pennock the wrong way to equalize.
The second half fizzled out with both teams having chances but i think they had settled for a draw. The game ends 2-2 and the crowd of 8000 go home happy after seeing an amazing game not maybe packed full of incident and goals but a game that caught the imagination of the whole community (why else would 8000 supporters go to a mid-week league match?)
