ROY HUNT
Yeovil v. Liverpool. FA Cup 3rd Round 1934/5

Roy Hunt, from Australia, reports:

This was the first time Yeovil had reached the 3rd round and drawn a 1st division team at home. This was achieved by beating two 3rd division teams in the previous rounds, Q.P.R. and Exeter.

The whole town went crazy when the draw was announced. I recall standing on the crowded terraces as a 13 year old schoolboy with my father on a freezing cold day and being thrilled to the marrow to see this crack Liverpool team, which included two internationals run on the field I had never seen the likes of, (no T.V. in those days). The man that stuck in my mind was the winger, a South African called Niewven Hayes, to me he looked like a second Stanley Matthews.

Yeovil took the lead early on but sadly we lost 6 - 2 inspite of all the enthusiasm and effort, to the pure professionalism of the opposition. Not a bad effort for out part - time pros, most of whom were on wages of £2 per week and the club struggling to pay this, in the depression years.

Thanks to a record gate of nearly 12,000, finances for the rest of the season were assured. This match was the beginning of a history of participation in the F.A.Cup that no other non-league team has ever equalled.
